Tips for Choosing Material of Eyeglass Frames

When choosing eyeglasses, it’s important to consider the material of the eyeglass frames. Not only are there many different shapes and colors in eyeglass frames, but advances in technology have also brought us a variety of new materials, for both the frames and the lenses, which makes eyeglasses more durable, lightweight and user-friendly. Eyeglass frames are now created from high-tech materials such as titanium and “memory metal” for the ultimate in strength and style, while the lenses are now thinner and lighter than ever before, even in high prescriptions. Certain materials might better suit your lifestyle or personality.
These are some common kinds of eyeglass frames materials for you:
PLASTIC
Plasticis a great material for frames because it comes in a variety of colors, textures, and patterns. The adjustability of plastic eyewear depends on the type of plastic used. Some are easy to adjust with little or no heat, while others are durable, impact-resistant, and great for sports. Some plastics can become brittle or discolored with age, so use caution and make sure you’re buying a quality plastic.

METAL
Metal is the most popular material for eyeglass frames. There are many types of metal you can choose, with each having its own distinctive properties.
Of all metals, Titanium is one of the best frame materials available. It’s lightweight, durable, and corrosion-resistant. Titanium also is hypoallergenic—so it’s a great choice for people who are allergic to other metals. Titanium is strong, easy to adjust, and comes in an array of colors. Titanium eyeglasses are great for hot, humid environments because of their strength. Titanium eyeglasses are perfect for active lifestyles or those with prescriptions that require thicker lenses.
Beta Titanium is an alloy of predominantly titanium, with small amounts of aluminum and vanadium. These other metals in the alloy make beta titanium more flexible than 100% titanium for easier fitting adjustments.
Memory Metal is a titanium alloy composed of roughly 50% titanium and 50% nickel. Frames made of memory metal are extremely flexible, and can be twisted or bended to an extreme and still return to their original shape. This feature makes memory metal frames great for kids or anyone who is hard on their glasses.

No matter what you expect your eyeglasses to be — lightweight, flexible, strong or hypoallergenic — you can find frames that meet your needs.
